One and All Juniors Lead the Way

Eight junior members of One & All Cycling based out of Bissoe Bike Hire and Cafe, took part in the GHS Regional Cycling Time Trial Championships this week and three qualified to go through to the National Championships in September.  Last year James Trott aged just 12 became the 12 year old National Champion and Melissa Kemp aged 14 from Bissoe came sixth nationally in her age group.  This year both qualified again to go the nationals with James Trott coming 3rd overall and 1st in his age group (13 years) with a time of 25 mins 12 secs and Melissa as the 1st lady and 1st in her age group (15 years) with a time of 28-58.  This year they were joined by new members of One & All – Jake Alderman aged 15 from Falmouth who came 1st overall becoming the SW Regional Champion and 1st in the 15 year old group with a time of 24-32.   Other young riders from the club gave respectable times for their first regionals as follows:  Joe Williams aged 16 (28-02), Duncan Haywood 14 years (28-47), Stan Thompson aged 13 years (28-55), Michael Hooper 14 (29-19) and Mathew Casey 13 years (33-23).

Ricci Pascoe, founder member of One & All Cycling and Vice Chair on the committee said “I am so proud of all these youngsters – this is a huge step for many of them who have only raced very locally or trained with their friends at the club.  It is a daunting experience for an adult but these young riders took it all in their stride and not only clocked up some personal best times we have a new regional champion, Jake Alderman, following the impressive performances of James Trott (national 12 year old champion) and Melissa Kemp last year.  Since the club began the interest expressed by youngsters to train and to race has been unprecedented and as a club we feel it is our collective responsibility to support them every step of the way.  Well done everyone”.

The George Herbert Stancer Championships was set up in 1970 to commemorate this notable English racing cyclist of the late 19th Century after he died in October 1962.  A trust fund was set up to promote and encourage young cyclists and is a national schools 10-mile individual time trial championship which is promoted annual by the Yorkshire Cycling Federation on a Sunday near his birthday.
